Air Mixing Solutions for Commercial HVAC Systems

Eliminate Air Stratification. Protect Coils. Improve HVAC Performance.

Poor air mixing inside an air handling unit can lead to nuisance freeze-stat trips, frozen coils, inefficient economizer operation, uneven temperatures, and unnecessary energy consumption. Lumin-Air represents Blender Products, the industry leader in engineered air mixing solutions that improve mixed-air temperature uniformity while reducing operating costs and protecting HVAC equipment.

Common HVAC Problems We Solve

  • Nuisance freeze-stat trips caused by cold air stratification.
  • Frozen heating or cooling coils resulting in expensive repairs.
  • Poor outside air and return air mixing.
  • Uneven mixed-air temperatures that reduce comfort and efficiency.
  • Limited air handler footprint for traditional mixing sections.
  • Inefficient economizer operation and increased energy costs.

What Causes Freeze-Stat Trips?

A freeze-stat protects the heating coil from freezing. Even if the average mixed-air temperature is above freezing, cold streaks of outside air can strike one section of the coil before the air has fully mixed. The freeze-stat senses this localized cold air and shuts down the unit to protect the coil. Proper air mixing eliminates these cold pockets and significantly reduces nuisance trips.

Channel Blender®

The Channel Blender® is a patented air mixing device that mechanically redistributes outside air and return air into alternating channels. This creates rapid, uniform mixing before the air reaches the heating or cooling coil.

  • Eliminates air stratification
  • Reduces nuisance freeze-stat trips
  • Protects heating and cooling coils
  • Reduces mixing section length by up to 50%
  • Improves temperature uniformity
  • Improves sensor accuracy
  • Lowers pressure drop compared to traditional static mixing sections
  • Suitable for both new air handlers and retrofit applications
  • Helps extend economizer operating hours

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes freeze-stat trips?
Most freeze-stat trips are caused by poor air mixing rather than inadequate heating capacity. Cold outside air creates localized cold streaks that strike part of the coil before fully mixing with return air.
Can the Channel Blender be installed in an existing air handler?
Yes. The Channel Blender is an excellent retrofit solution for existing air handlers that routinely experience freeze-stat trips, frozen coils, poor air mixing, or limited mixing section length.
Does the Channel Blender reduce energy consumption?
Yes. Better mixed-air conditions can extend economizer operation and improve heat transfer across heating and cooling coils, reducing heating and cooling energy.
Can Blender Products Channel Blenders be incorporated into any new air handling unit?
Yes. Blender Products Channel Blenders can be engineered into virtually any new custom air handling unit, regardless of the manufacturer. They are also available in Nortek custom air handlers and can be retrofitted into many existing air handlers to improve outside air mixing, protect heating and cooling coils, reduce air stratification, and enhance overall HVAC performance.
Which industries benefit the most?
Channel Blenders are ideal for industrial and commercial buildings, data centers, healthcare, laboratories, higher education, K-12 schools, government facilities, and any application with significant outside-air ventilation requirements.
Why is air mixing important?
Uniform mixed-air temperatures improve coil protection, sensor accuracy, occupant comfort, economizer performance, and overall HVAC reliability.
