The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shown that students who take the bus to school are more likely to arrive safely than those who commute by other means. However, while the school bus is one of the safest modes of transportation on the road, the air inside the school bus is often the lowest quality and most contaminated air in your entire school facility. This is a result of the school bus being the most densely populated space within a school system while also having minimal or no air filtration capabilities. Despite the focus on surface disinfection, it is well understood that many pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 and influenza are primarily spread via airborne transmission. Recent research has also shown that poor outdoor and indoor air quality along with fumes from diesel exhaust contribute to lower academic performance and respiratory illness. As a result, the school bus is a critical setting to improve indoor air quality and to help control and prevent airborne pathogen transmission through continuous cleaning of the airstream.
